I’ve had this printer/scanner for a couple of years or so and haven’t had a bit of trouble with it. Before this one I had a couple of Epson printers. Those were so so printers but died in about a year.
When I first got this HP combo scanner/printer I wasn’t too sure of it. But it prints nice photos and if you got the time and put it on its highest quality setting it will print 8.5 x 11 portraits that look just as good as professional photographers work.
It will do beautiful 4×6 prints without taking up a lot of time or ink. The ink cartridges are very easy to change and you can trade them in for refills at Office Depot or get the same ones refilled at Walgreens for a lot less then buying new ones.
It has several different size slots for different size and types of memory cards from different camera’s. Its supposed to be able to make prints directly from the memory card without the use of the computer or even having the computer turned on. I haven’t tried that feature yet with mine. But it does work as a copier without the computer having to be turned on. It will scan and print in color or black and white. Its a little slower than a regular copy machine but works just as good for a home office.
Over all for what I paid for mine, about 5 at Circuit City, and for what I need to use it for, I’m very pleased with it.

I picked up one of these because it cheap and I was fed up with epson printers permanently clogging if I didn’t use them often enough. Although I’m a photographer and designer, I didn’t expect much from this printer, thinking I’d use it just for everyday letters and photocopying, and go to a service bureau for important prints. However, I was quite pleasantly surprised with the quality of photo prints- the results on good paper are such that I’d be proud to show them to anyone.

Good points:

Photo printing quality is quite good, comparable to Epson general purpose printers I’ve used (in the 0 price range). Letter printing is just fine.

Photo color cartridges are available- they replace the black ink cartridge for printing photos with much finer color. I haven’t tried them, but it’s nice that a low-end printer supports these options.

I love the built-in photocopier. It’s convenient, and good industrial design means the all-in-one system with scanner is hardly any bigger than my old Epson with no scanner.

Paper handling is excellent- it has never choked on cardstock or envelopes.

New cartridges come with a postage-paid envelope to recycle the old ones. Installing and replacing cartridges is very simple.

It has a PictBridge port for printing directly from most modern cameras. I’ve never understood the point of that, but there you go.

Bad points:
Full-page letter printing isn’t terribly fast compared to older Epson printers that I’ve used. Photo printing speed seems comparable, though.

Photo prints are less smudge- and water-resistant than Epson’s great (but clog-prone) inks.

Scanner quality is perfectly acceptable for photocopying tax forms and the like, but I use a separate epson scanner for high quality scans.

Ink-level monitoring seems unreliable. The color cartridge ran out of blue before I got a warning.

HP’s longtime habit of loading the paper upside-down always confuses me!

The machine is fed by a 250-sheet paper cassette and by a 50-sheet automatic document feeder, which holds 3.5×5 inch to 8.5×14 inch paper. You can even fax, copy, or scan while you print.The ink jet printer prints at a speed of up to 7 pages per minute in monochrome and up to 4 pages per minute in color, giving you professional looking documents. The fax function operates with a 14.4k bps fax modem. With PC fax you can sent faxes directly from Windows applications, and you will appreciate the real time transmissions, especially when it comes to transmitting time-sensitive color faxes. The PC fax function also includes NetCentric PC Internet Fax software for faxing over the Internet. Convenience is key when it comes to the copier function. Brother MFC9100C Color Flatbed Multi-Function Center Specifications

The Brother MFC 9100C packs about as much punch as you’ll find in a multifunction printer. This ink-jet-based unit delivers 1,440 x 720 dpi printing, color flatbed scanning and copying, fax, and even video capture functionality.

Despite all of these features, the MFC 9100C is relatively compact. The unit includes a comfortably designed control panel across the front, with a standard flatbed scanner that sports a 50-page automatic document feeder. The paper source is a 250-page cassette that slides into the very bottom of the unit’s front; print output ejects just on top of this cassette. A parallel connection and phone jacks for the unit’s modem are located near the rear of the left side and an RCA plug for video capturing is on the front. This arrangement is nice, though we found the manual feed slot on the top of the paper cassette hard to see. Separate copy and fax buttons on the control panel make the machine easy to use for the first time.

We set up the MFC 9100C without any complications. The Brother accepts four separate ink tanks, so we recommend that you exercise caution while inserting them if you want to come away with clean hands. The unit’s software installation is automated and offered us several options of software to install. Our performance tests yielded almost 3 pages per minute (ppm) printing a 10-page Word document in normal mode, and 4.8 ppm in draft mode. Our photos printed with modest quality in 360 dpi on plain paper, but were spectacular in 1,440 dpi on glossy paper.

There’s plenty of memory in the MFC 9100C–enough to hold up to 600 standard fax pages and 100 speed dials. We found the fax features easy to set up through well-organized menus that are accessible through the control panel. The MFC 9100C includes a number of software applications on two CD-ROMs, including utilties for document management, color fax, automatic e-mail printing, and Corel Print & Photo House for graphic printing tasks.

This multifunction option delivers an impressive amount of flexibility and quality. Its high-resolution scanning and printing functionality, along with its color copying, scanning, and faxing features, make it powerful enough for any job that may come your way.

This printer is far superior to the HP printer that it replaces. I use it primarily for printing and faxing and both functions work well. It also scans and that feature is much better than that on my old machine. The one huge draw back is the install process. It seemed to go very well. In fact I commented to my wife that this was the easiest install that I had ever had with a printer. Alas I then realized that the machine would not print. I got error messages and stalls in the queue. After many tries and a completely new install, I finally called HP tech support. It took 45 minutes to get the machine functioning correctly. it seems that there are issues with Snow Leopard and the install disc that comes with the machine is not up to date. This creates a big problem. Tech support was very patient and guided me through a rather complicated procedure which did result in a successful install. I would urge HP to include a warning in RED that a special install is required for snow leopard. You must have the latest software downloads on your computer and you must use the latest install download from HP. Before this install, you must remove any previous installs; there should be no HP folder under Applications (unless you have more than one HP printer). I gave the printer 4 stars as a working printer; it would get 1 star for ease of installation.

Purchased this printer after a Samsung color laser printer had failed. It has been in service for six months and has not had any problems at all. Unlike most sub ,000 color laser printers this one does not force a toner replacement after a specific number of pages. That alone saves us hundreds of dollars a year in toner cost. The construction is solid and controls are intuitive to use. One thing to note, this printer is heavy.

Overall I really like the printer. Multifunctions are great. It was an outstanding value for the price paid. It works and performs as advertised. The printer has a tendency to jamb when printing side two of an orginal sheet in more than three pages. Start of the first copy is slower than expected before copying begins. That is not a disadvantage for me because I do not have a need for frequent copying. The copier produces brillant color copies. I would not hesitate recommending this product to others.
